InductEV, a U.S.-based startup, has developed a wireless charging technology for electric buses that allows them to charge wirelessly along their routes. TIME magazine recognized this technology as one of the 200 most important innovations of 2024, highlighting it in the sustainability category for its originality, effectiveness, passion, and impact.
First introduced in 2017, this technology has recently become widely adopted across multiple states in the U.S. InductEV's system enables electric buses to charge at high speeds of up to 450 kW while stopping at designated locations, eliminating the need for large, costly batteries or extensive charging downtime.
How It Works
The system consists of four components:
- Power Cabinets: Prepare and deliver electricity to the system.
- Embedded Road Pads: Asphalt-integrated pads, each capable of providing 75 kW of power, combine to deliver up to 450 kW.
- Vehicle Receivers: Installed under buses to convert magnetic fields into electricity.
- Driver Alignment Screens: Help drivers align the bus with the charging pads.
Despite initial concerns about energy efficiency, the system achieves over 90% efficiency in all weather conditions.
Benefits
InductEV’s technology supports buses from various manufacturers and modifies them to enable wireless charging. Key advantages include:
- Maintaining battery levels between 40% and 80% to extend battery life.
- Reducing the need for massive electrical infrastructure at depots.
- Lowering operational costs by minimizing the number of buses and charging stations required.
For instance, replacing 14 diesel buses with wireless electric charging reduced costs by $8 million compared to a traditional wired system.
Broader Applications
The technology isn't limited to buses—it is also used in railways, ports, airports, minibuses, and taxis, allowing vehicles to charge opportunistically without manual plugging or complex logistics.
Founded 11 years ago, InductEV continues to make strides in sustainable transportation, proving that innovation can drive both efficiency and environmental impact.
